International Students Hang Out at Chinese New Year Bash

It was the third day of Chinese New Year and some 55 international students of Sunway University College made their way to an “Open House” at the home of the Executive Director, Elizabeth Lee.

The students mingled and soaked up the Malaysian festival as they feasted at the high tea buffet on treats such as spit-roast lamb, satay, roti canai, laksa and fried chicken set in the lush garden of Ms Lee’s home.

There was an assortment of Chinese New Year cookies and cakes for dessert. To top of the party, the students had the chance to view a traditional lion dance. Two playful “lions” pranced around and one of them, after a few attempts, made a big leap on its hind legs to swallow a lettuce leaf and “ang pow” hung on a nearby tree.

With the rhythmic beat of the drums, the “lions” continued to scamp about presenting mandarins to the students and other guests for good luck. The students were tickled by the lions and some even gave one lion a pat.

Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr. Susan Cheah, the wife of the Founder and Chancellor of Sunway University College, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah gave away ang pows to each and every student. Ms Lee distributed a small present to each student in pink “ang pow” packets.

Andrew Ikechukwu Adudu from Nigeria in the American Degree Transfer Programme said “I was really taken aback by the welcoming attitude of Ms Lee towards the students. She made everyone feel welcome at her home. The food was great. It was the first time for most of us, including me, seeing a lion dance. I was amused as it was performed by mainly Indians and a Punjabi which really shows off the multicultural harmony of Malaysia”.

The students who attended the bash came from China, Botswana, Kenya, Mongolia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Djibouti and Yemen. Over 60 countries are represented by international students at Sunway and about a third of the total student number is made up of international students.
