AniManGaki 09

About 600 students and self-professing Anime and Manga aficionados from all over Malaysia converged at Sunway University College recently to celebrate all things Anime in an Anime event, AniManGaki 09, organised by the Sunway University College Anime Club (SUAC) recently.

Students and guests were dressed to the hilt in their costumes depicting various characters such as Naruto, Bleach and Final Fantasy with clothes purchased from Japan or tailor made. The 50 strong AniManGaki crew had been planning the event for six months. The festive atmosphere resembling the Harajuku in Japan also had mini Omatsuri (traditional Japanese festival) featuring goldfish scooping and Japanese yoyo water balloons. There were also Doujin booths in which amateur artists sold their “fanarts”.

The air was electric as “cosplayers” posed and mingled in their eye-catching costumes. There were also live band performances, movie screenings and a karaoke competition.

President of SUAC, Yvonne Sing, an American Degree Transfer Program student at Sunway who is also a Doujin artist of 2 years said, “We learnt a lot during the planning of the event such as teamwork and communication skills but we enjoyed it. I’m glad that it turned out to be really awesome with an attendance that was greater than expected.”

The Big Six Adventure

A Wine Tasting event organized as a part of their coursework saw 13 students from the Diploma in Events Management of Sunway University College working and learning together as they organised the ‘Big Six Adventure’ at The Wine Cellar, a boutique wine company in the Bangsar suburb of Kuala Lumpur. The objectives of the event were to educate the students in gaining experience in the different fields of MICE and Events Production Operations module and to offer a platform for guests to network whilst enjoying and educating themselves on wines. The “Big Six” refers to the 6 varieties of grapes used to make wines that were served namely Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon.

The semester four students worked hard towards making the event a success; liaising with The Wine Cellar, toiling to sell tickets and seeking sponsorship which was just the tip of the iceberg for this project. The students successfully sold over 50 tickets, priced at RM25 per ticket.
The Wine Cellar is founded by a team of wine buffs, offering first-rate customer service and superb quality wines. The event was sponsored by Wine Cellar, Jasmine magazine, Photodata, Cleo magazine, Canon, The Slimming Sanctuary and Stationary Supplies. The attendees of the event were briefed and given a tasting on wines by Wine Cellar’s very own Wine Consultants Ms. Lindsay Searle and Mr. J. Sern.

Apart from the wine tasting, the guests took part in a wine guessing game and the winners took home many prizes sponsored by Wine Cellar, Jasmine and Cleo magazines and Photodata.

Farisha Ahmad Faisal, a lecturer of the Diploma in Events Management expressed that the event had managed to provide the students with real industrial experience in organizing an event from planning to execution as well as the operational and logistics aspects of events management.

A Night with a “Phantom” Dinner

The hospitality students and lecturers of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management, Sunway University College presented an edgy fine dining event featuring “molecular gastronomy”. This is a new cuisine movement that has emerged from some of the world’s top restaurants, El Bulli, Piere Gagnaire, the Fat Duck and Alinea. The cutting edge cuisine applied physics, chemistry and biology in the preparation of an unforgettable dinner showcasing techniques like edible airs, espumas, spherification and gelification.

Students were the actors of “Phantom” as they served the courses

The spectacular six course dinner began with a brioche followed by appetizers featuring flowers, leafs and pods and a deconstructed French onion soup. The main courses were braised wagyu beef with foie gras and slow cooked salmon on a bed of pureed edamame. A mangosteen sorbet refreshed the palate and set a blank canvas for the enjoyment of two desserts skillfully prepared, a passionfruit mouse with a macaroon and Valrhona chocolate in 5 textures with rhubarb. There was a choice of a shaken spicy mango cocktail or green tea and lime mocktail.

The food was dramatically presented and was a treat not only for the tastebuds but for the eyes. The experience was, as touted by experts on avant garde gastronomy, a theatrical experience with the diners as the audience, the food as the presentation and the chefs and waiters as actors. Indeed some of the service staff were dressed as “phantoms”. The understated yet tastefully decorated restaurant strewn with red rose petals was the stage set.

Ms Anisha Chai, Head of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management said “I’m very proud that our students and lecturers are able to work together in an event that highlights an unconventional cuisine seldom encountered by hotel management students. It is eye opening and will add to their learning experience”.

Students prepared the dishes and were involved in the dining room service under the watchful eyes of Head Chef Patrick Siau and F & B Coordinator Daniel Chong. The degree students contributed in the planning and organisation of the event while the diploma students were involved in the production aspects. The DiningRoom@Sunway is a fine dining training restaurant that is open for lunch only on Tuesdays to Fridays during the semesters and dinners occasionally. The restaurant is open to the public.
