MLK Day is an American federal holiday, which falls on the third Monday of January each year, to commemorate the birthday (January 15) of the African-American civil rights activist. He is most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport and for racial equality in the US. This year MLK Day fell on 19 January.
“Sociology is the study of human behavior in society. In this subject, we do learn about Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr and his legacy. Besides, MLK is celebrated by Americans, from the US president to kindergarten children with various activities. As the Centre for American Education at Sunway University, I think celebrating MLK Day on the same day as they do in the US is a great experience and exposure for students. It is good for our students to get hands-on experience and learn what is being practiced in the US,” said Jaime who lived and lectured in the US for 7 years.
One group comprising Ashley Chong Yee Teng, Marisa Ezrah Biusing and Ahmad Nurafiq learnt about the Greensboro sit-ins and its significance in the US through this project. Greensboro sit-ins was a series of nonviolent protests in Greensboro of North Carolina in 1960 which led to the Woolworth department store chain reversing its policy of racial segregation in the US.

In addition, students’ creativity, teamwork, event organisation and time management skills were put to the test in this project. “Finding new ways to attract visitors to our booth and to present MLK in a way suitable for the public to digest the information in such a short time at our booth is a challenge to our creativity. We were given a week to prepare this while we have many more assignments from other subjects, so we really need to manage our time well. I would say all this are things to learn and pick up in life,” said Too Seng Zhao with his teammates Puteri Nur Izzaty, Ili Mariah and Jenny Loo.

The 4th exhibition themed “Fantasy Food and Hotel Paradise” was the biggest showcase of students work thus far organised under Sunway University Business School (SUBS) with the combined effort from Department of Marketing and Centre for Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Management.

This event exhibited 13 weeks of research work and findings completed by BSc (Hons) Business Studies, BSc (Hons) International Hospitality Management and Diploma in Business Administration students. This project is assessed as part of their modules including Marketing Research, Marketing Communication, Revenue and Profit Management, and Hotel Accommodation Management.
Indeed, the exposure was impactful. Not only students were able to think outside the box and organise a unique opening ceremony with students dressing up with costumes, role playing different nationalities and modelling food from different countries, students were able to apply what they have learnt from textbooks on their showcased projects. “Applying the conceptual model of service quality, a business theory developed in 1985, on cafes in Klang Valley, we were able to make the business sense out of our research – what are the factors of service qualities in independent cafes affecting customer loyalty amongst Gen Y patrons,” said Julian Lee Zu Yao of Bsc (Hons) Business Studies and president of Sunway University Marketing Society.
Students from Centre for Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Management also experienced similar exposure. The group comprising Cho Young Kwang and Yoo Hyejeong from South Korea; Nguyen Minh Chau from Vietnam; Ng Kae Jing and Yap Fong Uin studied Hilton’s operation and practices. They uncovered more facts about Hilton such as factors affecting Hilton’s room rates via primary research such as interviews and surveys with Petaling Jaya Hilton’s employees compared to literature review, and concluded that Hilton is the leading international hotel chains due to its understanding of its competitors and keeping up with the latest management trends.

Aside from attaining better understanding of their research topics, students picked up new transferrable skills. Fioone Wong Siang Niang, treasurer of Sunway University Marketing Society and the project leader of the exhibition believed that honing her communication skills is the most valuable gain for her as she was able to persuade and secure sponsors of the exhibition in forms of food vouchers and drinks.

Why not participate in an art gallery? 143 students from BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance, BSc (Hons) Business Management and BSc (Hons) Business Studies did just that when they were assigned with the creative, reflective and experiential project “The Leadership Identity Journey”.

The project, part of their coursework for the Leadership module, was held during the August 2014 semester. The students worked together in small teams to design and create A1 size ‘poster collage quilts’ to demonstrate their understanding of leadership in a hands-on creative way. Their work was then exhibited through an art gallery approach at the Graduate Centre.

Each poster-collage quilt featured photographs and artwork depicting the 6 phases of the human life and leadership which includes human condition, human trials, human crossing, human transformation, human triumph and leadership. This leadership concept is based on Joseph Campbell’s framework, ‘The Hero’s Journey’ as written in his classic work, The Hero with a Thousand Faces (2008, New World Library, 3rd Edition). Campbell’s research on myths, legends, fairy tales and folklore concludes that each person can be the hero (i.e. leader) of his or her life, and leadership is essentially a human story, which can be found throughout the world and history, in any culture, ethnicity, community and civilization, regardless of social, economic or political background.

The students created their masterpieces in answer to the key question Who is this person called ‘leader’? Shannon J. Ng, Senior Teaching Fellow of the Department of Management and Economics, Sunway University Business School, designer of the module and project, believes that showcasing his students’ work by setting up an “art gallery” would be an innovative and effective way for students to learn experientially “because art and crafts can express things beyond words,” said Shannon.

One of the teams comprising of Tracy Tan Yoong Yoong, Tong Wei Leng, Kody Loh Yean Kei and Fioone Wong Siang Ning arrived at a conclusion that trust is the key element that binds the six phases as it occurs in every phase for better leadership. For example, the phase of the human condition can be reflected through the trust between parent and child; in the phase of human crossing and the trust amongst teammates in overcoming risks. Just like how they work on discussing, negotiating and selecting the right pictures to depict each phase of life’s journey, they trusted in each other and ultimately brought about the success of their project.

Asides from a better understanding on the topics and theories of leadership, the students learnt invaluable life skills. Kody learnt to enjoy the process which eventually turned to sweet memories; Tracy cultivated patience; Wei Leng picked up negotiation skills; and Fioone honed her creativity. “We have grown in our studies and also personally; Most importantly, our friendship grew through this project,” said Tracy.

In the 2015 Financial Times (FT) ranking, published on 26 January 2015, the Lancaster MBA has recorded strong progress, jumping 27 places to 50th in the world. This is a standout performance relative to other MBAs in Malaysia. Besides, the FT ranks the Lancaster MBA 9th in the United Kingdom (UK), and 18th in Europe.

As the Chinese saying goes, “Good Things Come in Double”, the FT World MBA Ranking has also ranked the Lancaster MBA 1st in the world in the teaching of corporate strategy. Other would class achievements of the Lancaster MBA as reported by the recent FT World MBA Ranking include 1st in the UK and 2nd in the world for ‘aims achieved’, i.e. this is the only metric in the FT World MBA Ranking that measures what MBA alumni think of the quality of the course, and their experience being a student in the course. Moreover, Lancaster MBA also shows encouraging improvement in the areas of the weighted salary (up 10% on last year), career progress and placement success, and the international course experience measure which has made a substantial progress by 17 places.

Professor Sue Cox, Dean of Lancaster University Management School (LUMS), praised her colleagues in the MBA team for their commitment to the programme; and congratulated the MBA alumni on their career success which propelled Lancaster’s rise in the rankings. She added: “Our improvement in the Financial Times ranking is down to an exceptional MBA programme which attracts excellent students and is delivered by world-leading faculty. It confirms our position as a leading global business school”.

At a recent MBA industry networking dinner at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa, Professor Brian Imrie, Associate Dean (Postgraduate Studies), of Sunway University announced this notable achievement. The dinner is part of Sunway University’s efforts to enhance the learning and employability prospects of students within the MBA dual award programme. For students present, the FT rankings confirmed they had made the right choice in selecting Malaysia's premier MBA. The dinner also featured a special talk by Professor Datuk Razali Mahfar on “Extraordinary Leadership and Strategic Management Competencies – Driving Sustainable Growth”.
Two other Sunwayians who took home the consolation prize were Yeoh Kean Thai and Eleanor Lim Hooi Ling. “My Starbucks cup design incorporates many of Malaysia's wonders. The urban side is portrayed by the PETRONAS Twin Towers and the KL Tower. The hibiscus together with the rhinoceros hornbill are illustrated to represent our local flora and fauna while the wau depicts the ethnic part of the country. As Malaysia is also widely known for its diversity in culinary delights, I chose to illustrate the teh tarik as a cup pouring a mix of happiness and peace,” said Lim, also a Diploma in Graphic and Multimedia Design student of her “Teh Tarik Cup”.
The competition which drew more than 200 entries was open to artists, college students, professionals and those of the art community. Shortlisted entries were on display at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur for the KakiSeni International Arts Festival, which ran from Sept 12 to 16.
This award is in recognition of Dr Lee’s “outstanding contribution to the Sunway Group and as a business management expert, as well as his interest in Monash University and invaluable contribution to the development of Monash University Malaysia” as highlighted by Monash Chancellor, Dr. Alan Finkel during the ceremony.

“The conferment of his Honorary Doctorate from a prestigious institution like Monash University is an acknowledgement of his hardwork and dedication towards education. Sunway University is proud to be associated with a man of such calibre,” said Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director, Sunway Education Group and Sunway University.

Lee was the Sunway Group Representative developing and working with Monash University, Australia, to set up Malaysia’s first foreign university campus – Monash University Sunway Campus, which started up in 1998. He served as Sunway Campus’s Executive Director for seven years. He also played a key role in its development and expansion, including building the new independent campus and the establishment of the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is also a Founding Board Member of Monash University Malaysia.

In his speech in summarising a few of his life’s learning points, Dr Lee said, “First, to succeed and build a career, continuous learning is essential – Ancora Imparo. Second, career advancement is about progressing one step at a time; third, it is not essential to hop from company to company to develop a career; and fourth, never say never. Always keep an open mind and be proactive.”

“I never dreamt I would be standing here as I am today on such an occasion as this, and it would not have happened if it were not for the support and assistance from so many people. More specifically, I want to thank Sunway and Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah for giving me the opportunities and the trust; my superior, colleague, mentor and friend for the advice, guidance and support; and my colleagues and team for the passion, cooperation and ‘can do’ spirit. My sincere appreciation goes to my wife Yen for the understanding over the years of ups and downs – I hope it was more ups than downs. Finally, I was lucky and thankful to have my elder brother and late parents who sacrificed so much, so that I could have a good early education“, he continued.

Lee received his early education in Chinese schools and then went on to Universiti Malaya where he obtained a B Econ (Hons) in 1974. Fifteen years later he earned an Executive MBA from Cranfield University, UK. He began his career as a school teacher before moving on to the private sector in 1975. Joining Texas Instruments (M) Sdn Bhd (TI) in 1977, he later became TI’s first local Operations Manager and was appointed the first local Director of the company in 1989.

He joined Sunway in 1994 as General Manager (Operations) and was appointed Executive Board member of Sunway College in 1996 to spearhead the development of the education unit. Under his leadership, the Sunway Education Group has grown dramatically and achieved significant milestones in its path to becoming the country’s international education hub. The Sunway Education Group today comprises 11 institutions, to name a few; Sunway College, Sunway University, Sunway International School, Sunway College Johor Bahru, Sunway College Ipoh, Kolej Sunway Kuching, Sunway International Business Management including Monash University Malaysia; and Dr Lee serves as chairman of the Board of Directors of several of these institutions.

In 2005, Dr Lee was appointed to the Board of Directors of Sunway Medical Centre and became the Chief Executive Officer of Education and Healthcare. He is Co-chair of Jeffrey Cheah Foundation’s Management Committee and Board member of Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute.

“Sunway University is aiming to be one of the best private universities in Malaysia. We are very serious in developing relationship internationally with high quality institutions which enables students’ exchange, and also staff exchange programmes. We think in the days of a globalised world, it is important for people to work together internationally. Today I hope that we establish a very long term partnership, benefitting your (Kansai Gaidai College) students, our students, your staff and our staff. I hope we can be very close collaborators, very close friends for years to come,” said Prof Wilkinson.

Prof Kazuko envisioned working closely with Sunway University to nurture individuals who devote themselves to the development and growth of Asia. The collaboration between the two prestigious institutions was inspired by Japanese student, Mika Murai during her days at Sunway University. “I had a wonderful time in Malaysia and especially at Sunway University. Studying in Malaysia changed my initial doubt of effective English learning in Asia, this is a country where almost everyone, even children speak good English and at least 2-3 additional languages. Sunway University with its quality study environment, a foyer that is open 24 hours with free wifi and nearby Sun-U Residence (student accommodation) allowed me to focus better on my studies. So, I am very pleased to receive news on the partnership between Sunway University and Kansai Gaidai. I hope this will further enhance the diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and Japan.”

Kansai Gaidai College is a well-established and renowned Japanese college focusing on foreign language studies. Affiliated with 342 universities in 50 countries, the college sends 1,600 students to foreign countries annually. Kansai Gaidai College was founded in 1945 after the World War II with the aim of shaping leaders and equipping them with the communication skills to build resilient international community to avoid the repeat of war. Over the years, Kansai Gaidai College has grown from only 80 students to one of the biggest private higher education institutions in Japan today with annual intake of 1000 students. Through the partnership, Sunway University looks forward to rolling out exchange programmes with the established Kansai Gaidai College.
The Sunway Education Group and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) recently hosted the Harvard Asia Leadership Conference and Camp at Sunway University from August 17 – 22 in collaboration with the Centre for Asia Leadership Initiatives (CALI). Themed “Leadership and Innovation in the 21st Century, the event aimed at transforming young Malaysians into strategic global leaders to help change the country and the world through teaching and learning from facilitators with extensive experience from Harvard.

The event was the second to be organised by Sunway Education Group and CALI after a similar conference in January. Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of Sunway Education Group revealed that the collaboration with CALI will continue with more projects. “With our continuous effort, the project will get better. We may have to tweak it, or perhaps narrow down the age gap in order to meet the needs and demands of Malaysia,” she added. Samuel Kim, President of CALI concurred with the plan of returning to Sunway with the Winter Trek in December 2014 or January 2015.

The five-day camp with 150 participants which began on August 18 included diverse practical workshops, specially designed lectures and talks, panel discussions and study groups. The programme was developed by the CALI fellows based on courses, teaching and research from Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Dr Lee was especially pleased with the positive feedbacks received from the participants. “The most beautiful of moments always seem to pass by so quickly that they slip right through our hands, just when we want to hold onto them,” said Dr Lee while expressing her gratitude to all the Trekkers, contributors, volunteers and participants who made the event a reality.
His achievement is certainly outstanding as these exams are usually attempted only after one has completed their studies. “I wish to finish as many exams as possible before graduating, to ease the burden of studying for them while holding a job,” said Eng when questioned on what made him take the exams before completing his degree.

Eng, having passed all five exams in Probability, Financial Mathematics, Models for Financial Economics, Models for Life Contingencies and Construction and Evaluation of Actuarial Models, has taken a big step in his path in achieving qualified actuary status and is marching towards a rewarding career upon his graduation.
“With each exam passed I felt myself closer to qualifying as an actuary, this was what motivated me in the first place. It also serves as a testament that my study methods work and that my dedication has paid off”, said Eng who aspires to be an actuary in the traditional insurance business. His motivation to succeed does not stop here, Eng plans to work on the next qualifying requirement-Fundamentals of Actuarial Practice, a series of modules which encompasses a new online system introduced to expose actuarial students towards applying actuarial knowledge in real life situations. This requirement is essential for one wishing to attain the Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) designation. Eng also plans to improve his computer and soft skills to enhance his employability.

“Sunway University invites practicing actuaries to come to campus regularly to give talks about the actuarial profession. Attending these talks provided me a better perspective on the opportunities and challenges of becoming an actuary. On the other hand, there are workshops on business awareness and computer software conducted by Sunway University’s in-house actuary Mr. Seow Fan Chong, to supplement our theoretical understanding with sought-after technical skills to prepare us for our internship and future employment”, says Eng. He looks forward to his upcoming 12-week internship, “As an exposure to the future work environment and opportunity to put knowledge learnt into practice.”

Citing his study at Sunway University as an enjoyable experience, he says “The lecturers here have a lot of experience, are approachable and supportive in helping me understand the course materials. I also have the freedom to engage in more than just the academic side of life. I was privileged to be one of the committee members of a newly established student society, the Sunway University Actuarial Society. We arranged an academic trip to Bank Negara and have held a mathematics competition among other things despite starting out fresh. The society has met the aim of organising fun and educational events for students. I am glad, and having rewarded with a sense of fulfilment, to be able to contribute to the student body and enriching myself at the same time.”
The Selangor MUN hopes to take the local MUN to a greater extent and one day turn Malaysia into a globalised MUN hub by providing equal opportunity for all students to participate and nurturing delegates who will be ready to cross borders.
“The real work doesn’t just end on Sunday, it begins after the conference. With your experience here, you will be representatives of the United Nations, charged with building a better understanding of the goals to build a better world“, added Elizabeth Lee.
