Sunway Continues the Terry Fox Dream

Terry Fox had a dream. It was to create awareness and raise funds for cancer research through the Marathon of Hope. Having lost one leg to cancer, Terry Fox embarked on a journey across Canada to raise funds for this cause that attracted nationwide support. Although cancer consumed him, Terry’s dream lives on even in the hearts of Sunway students and staff.

The Sunway Terry Fox Run 2010 organized by Sunway University College’s Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) was conducted to commemorate Terry Fox’s 30th anniversary. It was aimed to raise both funds and awareness for cancer research in Malaysia through the support of donors and participants. Proceeds from the Sunway Terry Fox Run 2010, went to Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF), Malaysia.

This year’s Terry Fox t-shirt was bright blue sapphire with a number 30 printed on the back. An image of Terry Fox was implanted within the number 30. “Working together to outrun cancer” was printed on the front of the t-shirt making it a very meaningful wear. Students and staff from the CIMP program patrolled the walkways of Sunway University College, attempting to sell as many t-shirts as they could for the price of RM25 per shirt.
Aina Nordin, a committee member of the Sunway Terry Fox Run 2010 said “The enthusiasm from participants was amazing that day. People were all smiles despite the rainy weather. As the rain continued to pour, they continued with their work out”.

More than 300 Terry Fox T-shirts were sold, contributing to a total of an approximate RM 8,000 whereby all proceeds went to CARIF, Malaysia “We received tremendous support from the staff and members of Sunway University College”, Aina added. Participants were allowed to cycle, rollerblade, run or walk the 5km route that started and ended at the Sunway University College football field.
