Morally Right versus Legally Right

The inaugural Unleash Your Inner Hero Talk Series by the Justice League Sunway Edition started out with a talk by guest speaker Munirah Abdul Hamid, Founder of Pertiwi Soup Kitchen.

An active social worker, Munirah shared her experience in serving others and her views on the proposed controversial plan to bar soup kitchens in Kuala Lumpur’s shopping district earlier this year.

“Soup kitchens provide a guarantee of a decent meal for the homeless and hard-core poor in the city. Some of them can only afford to buy one packet of ice coffee which they sip throughout the whole day” she said.

"People with low wages, the hard-core poor are trying to make ends meet in the city - these are the ones we are helping", she explained.

The Pertiwi Soup Kitchen was launched in March 2010 by Munirah with a group of old friends. Today, the soup kitchen project feeds and provides basic medical service to Kuala Lumpur's homeless and poor four nights a week, it feeds an average 550 people each outing.

“I hope that through the Justice League Sunway Edition, and many more inspiring sharing sessions - you will all come to understand that individuals can strongly influence the workings of a community, the nation and the world. Through the work, dedication and passion of people like Ms Munirah, I hope you will be empowered to unleash your inner hero, and by working in partnership with others, realise that you have great power to initiate positive long term changes”, said Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of Sunway University and Sunway Education Group in her closing remarks for the session.

Justice League is Sunway University's Law Society which was initiated by a group of 7 students in 2013. It aims are to promote unity and teamwork, with a focus on human rights. The club hopes to encourage critical thinking about the future and the state of the world.
