The ‘Urban Zen’ themed concert aimed to cultivate interest in traditional Chinese music amongst the youth had the audience entertained by talented performers on various Chinese instruments especially the Gu Zheng.
As in any successful event, good team work is essential. “Great teamwork produces a great concert” said Loretta Tan, music director of Regal Orchestra. This was a crucial key element as proven in the success of the event where all parties worked very well together.
The Sunway University students were exposed to the planning and execution of an actual event, gaining valuable first-hand experience and better understand the working mechanics behind one. “I had lots of fun organizing this concert. It is a good opportunity to learn new things together with my classmates as event management students”, said Emelia Winata, Project Manager for the event. In their planning and execution, the group of students learnt to manage not only themselves but also their team members. They also learnt to design marketing strategies, manage finances, market the event, promote the sales of tickets and various event related tasks. “This event is memorable for us because we started from nothing but through hard work, we achieved success”, said Kor Yen Yin, Assistant Project Manager.

Yet it was not all about just work for the students, twenty percent from the sale of a total of 600 tickets sold for the concert were donated to the Ti-Ratana Welfare Home. “I gave it my all and at the end of it, it was worth the effort”, said Manisha Manvinder Kaur, Marketing Manager.
The project was part of Sunway University’s Diploma in Events Management curriculum. Adeline Kok, programme lecturer was the students’ advisor.
At Sunway University, students are encouraged to participate in the planning and organising of events where they experience hands-on learning. After finishing their programme, they will take with them not only knowledge in textbooks, but in-depth-knowledge and skills needed for when they join the workforce.
