SMJK Katholik Are The Champs (again) in the Sunway A-Level Math & Logic Challenge 2009

Sunway University College (Sunway) hosted and organised the annual Sunway A-Level Math & Logic Challenge held recently. The competition which started in 2006 is open to all secondary schools in Malaysia. As many as 342 students in 171 teams from 86 schools competed in the Challenge.


SMJK Katholik, Petaling Jaya emerged as the winner overall while SMJK Sam Tet, Ipoh and Chong Hwa Independent High School, Kuala Lumpur were First Runner up and Second Runner Up respectively. This is the second victory for SMJK Katholik as they were the champion in 2007. Each school is allowed to send a maximum of two teams with two participants per team. Through this competition, Sunway hopes to increase the level of math competency among students in Malaysian secondary schools and to instil a fun and creative way of learning math.


The competition questions were devised by Sunway A–Level math teachers headed by Dr Wong Yoke Chen, Director of the A-Level programme at Sunway. There were attractive prizes by Sunway for winning participants including trophies, certificates, cash prizes and tuition fee waivers in the Sunway A-Level programme. There were also book prizes sponsored by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). The first round was the Individual event of multiple choice questions and the second round was the more challenging group event of a question and answer session. The champion school in 2008 was Chong Hwa Independent High School, Kuala Lumpur and in 2006, was Foon Yew Independent High school in Johor Baru.


The competition is open to Form 3, 4 and 5 students and participants were mainly double math students from Form 4 and Form 5. The youngest participant this year was in Form 3, who was Tham Ying Hong, a member of the champion team of SMJK Katholik. The other member of the team was Fiona Tay Ting Nuan.
