Sunway students raise funds for World Vision and Mercy Malaysia

A one month fundraising campaign organised by the Sunway University Student Council, Sunway Volunteer Society and fellow students from the Philippines at the end of last year raised RM11,600 in support of World Vision Malaysia and Mercy Malaysia’s disaster relief efforts in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Haiyan. The donations collected were recently handed over in a mock cheque presentation ceremony.

Yang Mulia Raja Riza Shazmin Raja Badrul Shah, Honorary Secretary of Mercy Malaysia and Lee Siew Tin, Head of Marketing and Communications from World Vision Malaysia received cheques for RM5,800 each from Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of Sunway Education Group, and a member of the board of trustees for Mercy Malaysia.

“At Sunway, we believe in nurturing future leaders who will make a positive impact and contribution to society. Our programmes place strong emphasis on extra-curricular activities, and through them, encourage our students to hone not only their intellectual capabilities, but also the ability to develop to their full potential for brighter achievements and more importantly to serve the world’s communities in a meaningful way”, said Elizabeth Lee.

Teoh Han Ee, Advertising & Promotions Director of Sunway University Student Council said, “Due to assignment deadlines and study breaks, November is never a first choice to hold a donation drive due to insufficient time and man power. But we were highly aware and sympathised with the plight of the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, the dire need for food, shelter and medical assistance. It was of course of greater importance to help them as much as we could. At first, response was slow for the first few days but as news and the sense of urgency got around, people started responding and contributing. It is truly amazing to learn how generous the Sunway community can be."

Sunway University is a long term partner of World Vision Malaysia and Mercy Malaysia.
