Sunway Student Qualifies for the BMW Shorties Understudy Programme

“The film depicts a young person walking through a back alley with life going on around him which he does not notice. It represents our fascination and immersion with our phones. We tend to lose interest and focus in what goes on around us, so we end up somewhat lost. Technology, which is supposed to bring us closer to people around us but it is instead doing the opposite”, explained Shawn Lee, Director of The Grey Walls, a 2 minute short film which won him the chance to be part of the BMW Shorties Understudy Programme. He will be joining the team to work on working on the grand prize winner’s BMW-funded film as a production assistant.

Four groups of students from Sunway University’s Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Communication programme presented their Short Film Projects to the BMW team comprised of Sashi Ambi, Head of Corporate Communications, BMW Group Malaysia, Tan Seng Kiat, grand prize winner of the BMW Shorties 2013 and his colleague and Koe Shern, who acted in the film. The session included a special screening of Tan’s winning short film “32 Degrees of Love” together with a sharing experience by himself and Koe Shern.

It is interesting to note that the students had no prior experience on the production of a short film. The BMW Shorties Understudy Programme is an all-new community engagement programme dedicated to students.
