Hats off to 759 Sunway University Graduates

Sunway University’s 759 graduating students celebrated its 2014 Graduation Ceremony in the presence of Chancellor Y.Bhg Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO, at the Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa recently. The annual event saw the conferment of diplomas and degrees to graduating students of the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science and Technology, and the Sunway Business School.

Professor Mark Smith, Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University was present to confer the University of Lancaster scrolls to the graduating students from the Communication, Computing, Psychology, Business, Hospitality and Tourism disciplines for the honours degree programmes by Sunway University, validated by Lancaster University.

Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah in his commencement speech addressed the young graduates, ” As you leave this hall today to start the next chapter of your life, you take with you the knowledge, professional skills and maturity to make a major contribution to your chosen field, your family, your community and, just as importantly, your country.

Besides applying academic learning to real human needs, please make use of the knowledge you have gained into thinking beyond the norm. I do hope you will take time to reflect on the difference you can make in society, gain a greater understanding of your role in the community, and the impact your contributions will have towards those in need of service.”

Valedictorian Tsai Yao Cherng who graduated with first class honours in BSc (Hons) in Computer Science said, “Education at Sunway University is not just about academic excellence. Here, students are provided ample opportunities to build up social, leadership, creativity and critical thinking skills.”

“Our journey ahead might not be smooth sailing but Sunway has equipped us with enough experience to persevere", he added, in encouraging his fellow graduates.

Tsai who has undergone internship at Deloitte Consulting & Virtual Logic, was part of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) team which won the gold medal for the QR Code Car Park System at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2014 earlier this year.

He also played a key role as a Peer Counselling Volunteer and was active in raising awareness for animals through “A Voice for Animals Campaign”.

Tsai started out at Sunway with a Diploma in Information Technology, during which time he also won a scholastic award and then a continuing scholarship award for his degree in Computer Science. Tsai was among the 20 graduating students who were awarded the Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award for outstanding academic results, his second scholastic award from Sunway University.
