Datuk Dr. Wee Ka Siong from the Ministry of Education who was unable to attend was deputized by Datin Faezah binti Haji Yusof. Datin Faezah and Dr. John Guy, Senior Education Consultant for CIE presented the awards to the outstanding students. Dr. John Guy said, “172 winners of the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards this year were from Malaysia, making Malaysia one of the top performing countries. The 21st century learning approach brings coherence into education as the subjects extend beyond the syllabus. The line of dedicated teachers inspires each and every student to be confident in tackling a subject” during his speech.

Gan Fang Wen, who topped the world in Mathematics AS Level, was also awarded 2nd placing in Malaysia for Best across Four Cambridge International AS-Levels and 3rd place in Malaysia for Best across Three Cambridge International A-Levels.

Gan said “ The A-level programme is distinct from the other pre-university programmes as it involves more reading, more studying and a more attentive attitude from students who choose to pursue this pathway. A lot is covered in one classroom sitting and if your attendance is weak, you will need to double the effort in order to catch up”. Gan who hails from Johor Bahru has been accepted to pursue her studies in Medicine at Cambridge University while Gherman will be heading to Imperial College, London to pursue her undergraduate studies in Biochemistry.

Gan felt she has come a long way because of her dedicated teachers. She recalls her chemistry teacher as someone who knows how to deliver, knows her student’s strengths and weaknesses and knows how to coordinate well. “The mentor-mentee system was truly helpful in helping and guiding students in their applications to their preferred universities’, she said.

The 16 Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards awarded to the Sunway A-level students, the 25% of the A-level students who scored straight A’s and 100% of the students who successfully completed the A-level programme reflect the high quality education that Sunway offers. These are the academic results that universities around the world look for and which ensure a good preparation for a smooth transition into a university.
