This is why Sunway took the initiative to invite the key corporate players to Sunway University to provide an opportunity for their graduates-to-be to meet the representatives of these leading companies in an exclusive networking tea held in Sunway University recently.

It’s also easier to ask questions due to its informal setting”.

205 students of the Victoria University (VU) twinning programme in Sunway College held their heads up high as they went on stage to receive their scrolls from VU Chancellor George Pappas during their graduation held in Petaling Jaya recently.

But this year’s ceremony was boosted by much pride as there were a number of scholarship recipients and well-rounded achievers.

Left to right, Tommy, Liew Jun Keen, Professor Peter Dawkins, Chancellor George Pappas, Puan Sri Susan Cheah, Amy Kok and Ng Chin Peng

Among the fresh and wide-eyed faces, Amy Kok Sok Jen who was a Star scholar, emerged the best student in the graduation as she attained an overall of 83% marks and 23 High Distinctions and Distinctions in total, out of 24 subjects. She was also a recipient of the Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award in 2010. Amy is currently employed with KPMG in Singapore.

“As a student, I was very grateful to Sunway College as it was always looking for ways to improve the quality of education by conducting workshops to help us understand better what employers seek in fresh graduates and in organising team-building activities which promote leadership skills. I am and will always be very proud to be both a Victoria University and Sunway former student.” shared Amy.

Tay Jun Yin, a CIMB Bank ECA Achiever’s Award recipient best exemplified that excellence in studies is possible with active ECA involvement. Jun Yin was the President of the Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter in 2010 and represented Sunway in inter-college Taekwondo competitions. He made Sunway proud when he won the MAPCU Taekwondo championship in 2008. Jun Yin scored 9 High Distinctions and 8 Distinctions out of his 24 subjects overall. Jun Yin is currently employed with Deloitte. Ng Mun Foong, Victoria University Business Club President in 2009 and exchange student in VU, Melbourne last year, is now employed with Bloomberg.

Ng Chin Peng, who was also a Star scholar, is with Maybank Investment Bank. Jimmy Goh Tzun-Foo, a Sin Chew Daily Education Fund scholar is now with OSK Investment Bank. Liew Jun Keen, an NST MAPCU scholar is gainfully employed with Sunway City. The President of the Sunway Student Council 2010 Joyce Wong Su Ting (employed with Lighthouse in Sarawak) was another CIMB Bank ECA Achievers Award recipient. These scholarships or awards were jointly funded by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and VU.

Among the graduates, 83 were international representing around 36 countries. M.Z Mohamed Zahri, from Sri Lanka said “The VU syllabus was a suitable mix of theory and practicality and ensured that we were tested on various dimensions. Nothing would have been possible without the support and enthusiasm of the lecturers and tutors. The reason for their effectiveness, simply put, was that they made learning interesting. There are a few, I will never forget and I will always try to stay in touch with, simple because they inspired me”. Zahri is now working as Director of Marketing and Sales, KDG Global in Sri Lanka. Another graduate from Oman, Abdallah Saleh Issa Al Kindy who had to endure moving from VU Sunway to VU Australia and back to VU Sunway said he worked hard right to the end, with help from lecturers, staff and friends and he was happy to finally graduate.

Eka Diah Gun Herwanti from Indonesia, who will not let her disability deter her from attaining her goals was among those who graduated from the cohort but attended the ceremony in Melbourne earlier.

Vice-Chancellor and President of VU, Professor Peter Dawkins who gave the occasional address was very proud to be in Malaysia on this special day and advised the graduates. “Instead of thinking of your award today as a ticket to success, let me ask you to think of it as your opportunity to change the world. It is possible that wisdom can be viewed by how much you use education: to better yourself and your community; to become engaged and an active global citizen. Ensure your future is shaped by integrity and the pursuit of excellence – two of VU’s most cherished values.”

The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation gifted RM383,000 in scholarships and financial aid to the Barisan Youth Education Scholarship Fund which was set up in conjunction with the Barisan National Youth Job Fair held for 3 days recently at the Putra World Trade Centre. The mega fair attracted 650 participating organisations and provided good opportunities for youth to meet with potential employers.

The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation pledged scholarships for 10 different programmes of study in such areas as accounting, business, tourism, graphic design, IT and psychology; at Sunway University. BN Youth has stated that the scholarships and financial aid will be available to qualified students regardless of race or religion and ensured that only those who deserve scholarships will receive them. This is in line with the spirit of the Foundation which is that a good education at the highest level should not be denied to those deserving and to those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation was the only Foundation that contributed towards the BN Youth Education Scholarship Fund.
