The students, Yvonne Tan Xue Wen, Puvishanan Pushparaja and Shirin Goh Sue Ying from the Diploma in Graphic and Multimedia Design and Andy Lau King Ang and Lee Yang from the Diploma in Interior Design, exercised their creativity and designing skills by creating an exhibition booth for the new Hyundai Veloster within three days with RM 10,000. The display was exhibited for a week at the university campus.

The students envisioned the design concept after combining the idea of the name Veloster with velocity, and incorporating power, on to a road to represent the high speed of a rollercoaster track. “It’s so fast, it flips the road,” said Puvishanan. Yvonne said, “Working on this was just like our concept, a roller coaster ride. There were times when everything was fun, filled with exciting moments and we got to learn so many new things throughout the duration of this competition. However, this was the first competition we participated in and being inexperienced, we found ourselves in many unfamiliar territories especially when it came to handling a situation. We are grateful to our lecturer and mentor, Mr Wincen Foong Hock Kuen, for guiding and motivating us throughout the competition.”

The students used a long piece of paper and bent it into different shapes to see which would best bring their idea to life. Yvonne added that her knowledge from the programme had assisted her throughout the competition. “Before deciding on anything, we brainstormed which colours would best complement the car and what designs should be printed on the ‘road’. We combined our strengths which is what we have learnt from the courses we are enrolled in and created ‘Flipped’”, shared Yvonne.

Sunway University received RM 30,000 (RM20, 000 for the university and RM 10,000 for the team) for winning second place in the Veloster Rev It Up Inter-College Challenge. The winners were chosen based on the number of votes on Hyundai Malaysia's Facebook page and a panel of judges.
