Students from SMK Siburan Win Sunway Scholarships

Students Angelina Jefary, Rozanne Jeyanti Rajendran, Moses Mc Govern Philip Johnson, Prince De Mcqueen Wheatley and Muhd Fahman Fitri Mohd Mohtar from SMK Siburan, Sarawak won themselves full scholarships to pursue further study in any one of the Pre-University programmes at Sunway College or the Sunway University American Degree Transfer Program.

The members of Funky Fresh Masters of the Universe beat five other teams in the Grand Finals of Click! 4.0. Their project addresses a critical social issue in their community - the participation of youths in illegal drag racing where many often end up injured or killed. Their initiative provides a platform for youths to spend time productively through participation in singing, dancing and the performing arts with a series of concerts where they perform for their peers and members of the community. The project drew support not only from members of their community but the police department as well.

11 Sunway ADTP students receive WMU scholarship

11 Sunway University American Degree Transfer (ADTP) students walked away with scholarships from Western Michigan University (WMU) totalling up to USD 108,000 recently. Ling Jin Yew received a scholarship worth USD 16,000 to pursue Aviation Flight Science in WMU while Arafat Bin Mahabub received a scholarship worth USD 14,000 to pursue his studies in Industrial and Entrepreneurial Engineering. The other recipients are Rachel Zhi En Choe, Tan Sze Yan and Abdullah Faisal Al-Gefry who each received a scholarship worth USD 14,000 while Priya Ramakrishnan, Nguyen Phoung Hai Quynh and Blessing Itayi Chindomu received a scholarship worth USD 8,000 each. A scholarship worth USD 4,000 was awarded to Low Jia Sheng, Leong Wei Teng and Tan Sim Yee. 24 Sunway ADTP students were also accepted in to WMU for the fall 2012 semester.

RM 5.7 Million Worth in Scholarship for Deserving Students

Sunway University (Sunway) was proud to honour over 1000 students during the recent Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Scholarship Award Presentation Ceremony in May 2011. Sunway awarded RM 5.7 million in scholarships through the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation making the total amount of contributions so far RM 66 million worth in scholarships since it was incepted in 1997 through the Sunway Education Trust Fund. The Sunway Education Trust Fund was converted to the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation in 2010 to further solidify our Founder and Chancellor's belief to transform the lives of many through the benefits of education. The recipients of the scholarship was awarded the Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship and The Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship.

Sunway University College gave RM2.9 million at scholarship presentation

Another scholarship presentation ceremony by Sunway University College held in October this year, affirmed and acknowledged its top and deserving students.

An amount of RM2.9 million were given to the 380 recipients at the ceremony. The source of the funding was the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation which was launched in March this year. This year, RM6.9 million was handed out on two occasions including this one. Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr Susan Cheah, the wife of Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO, the Founder and Chancellor of Sunway University College gave away the scholarships.

Saluting Exceptional Students

This year's second Scholarships & Awards Presentation at Sunway University College awarded close to RM2 million in scholarships through the Sunway Education Trust Fund to 285 recipients. Earlier this year in May, Sunway awarded a total of RM3.1 million in scholarships to 785 students. The total that the Trust has dispersed since it was incepted in 1997 is RM50 million in numerous scholarship ceremonies.

The Sunway Education Trust Fund has recently been converted to the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation to further solidify Sunway University College’s Founder and Chancellor's beliefs in the life-changing benefits education. The Foundation seeks to receive and administer funds for educational, scientific, medical and charitable purposes including scholarships based on merit and to those in need of financial assistance.

The ceremony saw scholarship recipients being awarded in five categories that spanned academic achievement, sports and ECA. There were also two Chancellors Scholarship recipients Lee Ker Ching reading the Bachelor of Science Accounting and Finance and Vanessa Ong Shu Yi who is pursuing the Bachelor of Science Psychology. This special scholarship is funded by both Sunway University College and Lancaster University to encourage academic achievement in the Lancaster validated and Sunway developed honours degree programmes in business, computing, psychology, hospitality and tourism management.

Sunway University College in collaboration with CIMB Bank Berhad also presented the Sunway University College CIMB ECA Achievers scholarship to academic achievers who involve themselves in ECAs. The recipients were Ronald Soo Ki-Meng, Director of the Sunway University College Student Council 2009 and President of the Swimming Club. The other was Regina Choo Jia Ling, Deputy President of the Sunway University College Student Council 2009. The Sunway University College Sports Scholarship was presented to 17 students who have been active in sport or played sport at state or national level. The Sunway University College–CIMB Sportsman Award recipient was Abdulhalim Abdullahi Liman, Captain of the Sunway football and futsal teams while the Sportswoman award went to Nur Hidayah Binti Adam, a national bowler and President of the Sunway Bowling Club.

Book vendors provide a kitty for community scholars

Everyone knows there is a veritable feast of scholarships out there. Not only designed to curb a brain drain, scholarships provide a better life. Sunway University College offers a boost in this direction to the financially strapped, through the yearly Tun Dato’ Seri Omar Ong Yoke Lin Community Scholarship.

The criteria candidates have to meet are that they must come from a charitable residential children’s home, poor community or single parents and the family income must be less than RM1,800 per month. The scholarship provides full tuition fee, all related fees and accommodation. The funds come from the Sunway Education Trust Fund, started in 1997 by Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr.) Jeffrey Cheah, Founder of Sunway University College who dreamt of contributing to society through education. Sunway University College is the only private institution of higher learning that provides such a scholarship.

 

Sunway went ahead to set up a book allowance for the scholars recently. Ms Wong Sook Jean, Chief Librarian of the Tun Hussein Onn Library at Sunway, is an ISO-certified library, approached book supply companies for donations for the scholars. “We are very grateful to our book suppliers for their contributions which would help the community scholars in a meaningful way”.

The book supply companies contribute a total of RM5,000 per annum for three years, 2008-2010. The companies are EMO Book Services Sdn Bhd (RM1,000 per annum), Koperasi Kedaibuku Universiti Malaya Ltd (RM1,000 per annum), PV Knowledge Sdn Bhd (RM1,000 per annum) and Universiti Book Store Sdn Bhd (RM2,000 per annum). They came for a presentation ceremony at Sunway University College which was held recently. A total of 21 community scholars benefit from this donation and they will be able to request for books through the library. The books can be from prescribed book lists or any books that the students require.

Emmanuel Yong, a community scholar who lives with his mother, and who has already requested 6 books said “The book allowance makes things very convenient for us. I am grateful to Sunway and the book supply companies for their support”

To date, 35 students have been offered the community scholarships since January 2002. Out of these, 11 students were from charitable homes such as Rumah Care, Rumah Faith, Rumah Keluarga Kami, Rumah Ozanam and Shepherd’s Centre. 7 students have since graduated 3 with a bachelor’s degree, 3 with a diploma and 1 with a certificate.
